ZAANDAM, Netherlands -- Ahold here said sales fell while earnings rose for the second quarter and first half ended July 16.Net income increased 8.9% for the 12-week quarter to 102.5 million Netherlands guilders ($66.1 million at the exchange rate of 1.55 Netherlands guilders per $1 U.S.). Net income increased 8.9% for the 12-week quarter to 102.5 million Netherlands guilders ($66.1 million at the exchange rate of 1.55 Netherlands guilders per $1 U.S.). Income rose 8.6% for the half to $143.3 million.

Sales fell 1.8% in the quarter to $4.35 billion and 0.9% for the half to $9.87 billion.
