Indeed, 2003 was also a good year for the categories, with sales growing by 14.5% in this channel to just over $1 billion. The slowest growth in sales took place in calendar year 2002, with sales jumping only 0.8% to $883.3 million.
Of the three subcategories, snack nuts remained the most popular with supermarket shoppers, experiencing a sales increase of 18.7%, and accounting for $993.9 million of the total sales in supermarkets. Sunflower/pumpkin seeds followed at a distant second, generating sales of $93.5 million, an increase of 6.4%. Toasted corn nut snacks completed the category with sales of $6.4 million, a 7.3% increase.
