Wegmans Names Leo New Officer

In this new position Leo maintains his previous responsibilities as corporate controller, a position he held since 1989. Leo joined Wegmans in 1978 as cash manager. He reports to Robert Wegman, chairman of the company.

Safeway Taps Financial Officer

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway here said last week Julian C. Day, executive vice president and chief financial officer for the past five years, plans to leave the company in June.

He will be succeeded by David G. Weed, who left Safeway earlier this year to pursue other interests. At the time of his resignation Weed was senior vice president and manager of the company's 241-store northern California division. He was succeeded by Bruce Everette, former manager of Safeway's Phoenix division.

In his new post Weed, 47, will report to Steven A. Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

According to Safeway, Day, 46, is leaving Safeway to pursue the top leadership position at a publicly traded company. Before joining Safeway in 1993, he was president and chief executive officer of Bradley Printing Co., a subsidiary of World Color Press -- an operating unit of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., the New York-based investment firm that formerly controlled Safeway.

In another executive change, Safeway said Lyn C. Gordon, 51, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Safeway's Vons division in southern California, has been named an executive officer with the title senior vice president, strategic development, a new position. The company said he will be assisting in Safeway's pursuit of acquisitions.

It could not be determined last week to whom Gordon will report. No successor has been named to his position at the Vons division.

Canadian Council Appoints CEO

MONTREAL -- Nick Jennery has been named president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, following the resignation of John Geci.

Jennery has spent time in the retail grocery, manufacturing, technical and service sectors. Previously, Jennery worked as senior vice president of the Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada. He is also known for his active role on the Canadian Efficient Consumer Response Committee.

New St. Goar Leads Dixie Saving Stores

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Edward St. Goar here has been named president and chief executive officer of Dixie Saving Stores following the retirement of Herbert St. Goar, his father, after 60 years of service with the company. Herbert St. Goar assumes the position of President-Emeritus.

Edward St. Goar has worked with Dixie for 25 years, most recently as vice president and chief operating officer, a position which he held since the late 1980s.

He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and holds a MBA from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

The position of vice president and chief operating officer remains vacant.
