Culligan Becomes Member Of A&P's Board Of Directors

Culligan joined A&P as executive vice president and COO in January 2001, and was appointed president and COO in February of this year. She came to A&P from Nabisco Holding Corp., where she was president of Nabisco International.

Christian Haub, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, said, "Beth has been instrumental in our company's resurgence in the past year. I am pleased that the board has recognized her leadership and experience by electing her a director. I look forward to working with Beth in our management roles, and as members of the board."

Sims Joins Albertson's As VP And General Counsel

BOISE, Idaho -- John Sims will join Albertson's this week as executive vice president and general counsel. He is replacing Tom Saldan, who retired in September 2001.

Sims will report directly to Larry Johnston, Albertson's chairman and CEO, and will serve as a member of the company's executive committee. He will be responsible for all legal issues at the executive level.

Previously, Sims spent 22 years with Federated Department Stores as vice president and deputy general counsel, and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of Federated's legal department.

Schlaepfer Named VP Of Food Lion's Western Division

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Cindy Schlaepfer has been appointed vice president of Food Lion's western division, a new position created by the company. Food Lion is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, Salisbury, N.C.

Schlaepfer will direct all retail operations within the division, which includes about 150 stores in three regions that cover Tennessee, Kentucky, northern Georgia, western North Carolina and the southwestern counties of Virginia.

Previously, Schlaepfer was southern division vice president of retail operations for Food Lion's sister company, Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine. Under her leadership, the division grew from 21 to 50 stores and entered five new markets.

Schlaepfer began her grocery career with ALDI, Essen, Germany. She holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University.

Kroger Elects Bond Attorney Lewis To Board

CINCINNATI -- The Kroger Co. elected David B. Lewis to its board of directors. He replaces Carlton J. Jenkins, who recently resigned from the Kroger's board after three years of service.

Lewis, who has more than 30 years of experience as a bond attorney, currently serves as general counsel to the National Association of Securities Professionals.

Minyard Elected To Michaels Stores Board

IRVING, Texas -- Liz Minyard, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Minyard Food Stores, Coppell, Texas, has been elected to the board of directors of Michaels Stores here.

Michaels Stores is an arts, crafts, framing, floral and decorative wall decor and seasonal merchandiser for the hobbyist and do-it-yourself home decorator. The company owns and operates 708 Michaels Stores in 48 states and Canada, 142 Aaron Brothers stores primarily on the West Coast, and one wholesale operation in Dallas, Texas.

Toth Takes Executive Director Helm At NEW

CHICAGO -- Last week Joan Toth took over as executive director of the Network of Executive Women for the Consumer Products & Food Retail Industry here.

In this new position, she will be responsible for the overall management of the network in its marketing, sponsorship, programming and event execution efforts.

Toth has served as NEW's secretary since April 2001. Prior to that, Toth was president of Go-To-Market Strategies, a sales and marketing consulting firm.

NEW was formed by a joint industry team of executive women representing retailers, wholesalers, suppliers and industry associations and the media. Its mission is to attract, retain and advance women in the consumer products and food retail industry through education, leadership and business development.
