LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. -- Frieda's, the specialty produce distributor based here, is targeting vegetarian consumers with a new home-meal replacement program for produce departments.

Frieda's developed the vegetarian-based meals to address what it had identified as a growing group of consumers who are looking for healthier meal choices, according to Robin Osterhues, director of marketing for Frieda's.

"Statistics show that the average vegetarian consumer is a retailer's dream customer, indexing higher than average national levels on education, income, employment, residential value, age," Osterhues said in a statement.

"Frieda's Vegetarian Meal Solutions line will help retailers develop a new merchandising opportunity that appeals to consumers' desire for healthful meals and meal ideas that are tasty, filling and meatless."
