NEW YORK -- Gristede's Foods here said its sales for the quarter ended Aug. 29 increased 16.3% to $43.8 million, while sales for the first 39 weeks of fiscal 1999 were up 13.8% to $132.3 million.

The company also said same-store sales rose 15.3% in the quarter, and 15.7% year-to-date. Cash flow grew 264% to $1.6 million for the quarter and 35% to $6.2 million year-to-date.
For the third quarter, Gristede's cut its net loss 74.1% to $359,000, while for the first nine months of 1999 the company had a profit of $484,000.
Gristede's operates 42 supermarkets in the New York metropolitan area under the Gristede's and Sloan's banners.
