NEW YORK -- Gristedes' Sloan's here said sales totalled $39.2 million for the second quarter ended May 31 and $78.7 million for the first half.

Its predecessor company, Sloan's Supermarkets here, acquired 29 privately held Gristedes and Sloan's stores last November; as a result, operations for the quarter and half were not comparable with the results of the previous year, the company said.
The company also said same-store sales in the second quarter were up 9.7% over the first quarter.
Gristedes' Sloan's said sales at six stores that have been remodeled since the merger have increased, on an annualized basis, more than 70%; it said it plans six more remodelings before the end of the fiscal year in November.
At the time of the merger, the company said it would probably convert all stores to the Gristedes name once all remodelings have been completed.
