Despite heightened competition and a steady decline in supermarkets' share of the food dollar, Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine, sees this as "a time of opportunity, a time to stay connected to consumers, a time to grow by adding value and a time to be innovative" and to fulfill its commitment to training and retaining the best associates, Beth Newlands Campbell, senior vice president, business strategies and retail operations, said last week in accepting the SN Retail Excellence Award on behalf of Hannaford from David Orgel, SN editor-in-chief (top left). John Beckner, director of pharmacy and whole health for Ukrop's, Richmond, Va., accepted the SN Whole Health Enterprise Award on behalf of that chain. He said his company hopes "to validate the supermarket's role in the community" by making its pharmacies a distribution point for personalized information on health and wellness. The awards were presented during last week's Food Industry Leadership Center Executive Conference 2005 sponsored by Portland State University, Portland, Ore.
