Retailers, Apple Growers Sponsor 9/11 Effort

NEW YORK -- More than two dozen supermarket retailers with stores in New York state helped raise $50,000 during a week-long promotion of Empire apples for a Sept. 11 relief fund. The event, called Empires Across New York, was sponsored by the New York Apple Association, and featured the state-grown Empire variety apples in retailers' advertising circulars. Five percent of the week's gross sales from the retailers went to Clear Channel Cares, a relief fund maintained by Clear Channel Communications. The media company also aired public service announcements promoting the initiative on its New York state radio stations.
