For the year, the pharmaceutical maker also showed an increase in net income and sales. Merck's 1993 net income was $2.1 billion, up 9% from $1.9 billion. Sales rose 9% in 1993 to $10.5 billion. Sales for 1992 were $9.6 billion.

Merck's quarterly report took into account the November 1993 acquisition of Medco Containment Services.

Del Offers Antiseptic for Gums

NEW YORK -- Del Pharmaceuticals has begun shipping Orajel Perioseptic, an antiseptic cleansing liquid for irritated gums.

The oxygenating formula in a saline base cleans and promotes the healing of oral wounds and minor gingival inflammations. The list price for a 0.45-ounce of Orajel is $3.22. Targeted consumer advertising will include print ads in leading health and lifestyle publications. Coupons and rebates will be presented in Sunday newspapers at specified intervals, and coupon savings will be made available. Additionally, Del Pharmaceuticals is employing a direct mail marketing approach to dental offices, including product samples and educational brochures to be distributed to patients.
