onal Chicken Council predicts the 13th annual National Chicken Month promotion in September will generate sales 60% greater than in 1989, the program's inaugural year. Special sales kits with enhanced supermarket tools are now going out to retailers in anticipation of the annual promotion. The new kit includes a CD-ROM with a series of updated graphics, and an on-pack coupon program encouraging purchases of related products manufactured by promotion partners, according to officials from the NCC and U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, co-sponsors of the event. As in past years, select national magazines will include a popular eight-page booklet containing chicken recipes, coupons and other information, they said.

Fairway Pushes Seafood Ecology

NEW YORK -- Fairway Market has joined with Seafood Choices Alliance, Washington, for a 10-week, in-store, consumer education program at two of the chain's three stores to promote sustainable seafood choices. The program focuses on five seafood items -- Pacific salmon and halibut, Atlantic mahi mahi, and farmed catfish and tilapia -- deemed sustainable by SCA, a clearing house of information for seafood-selling professionals. Fairway's effort is on point-of-purchase information, including large signs at the seafood counters, prominently displayed fact sheets about featured items, and bag stuffers. A program highlight is specially prepared recipes created by some of the city's top chefs, including Rick Moonen, executive chef and partner of Oceana.

AHA Program Certifies Second Dairy

WASHINGTON -- The American Humane Association and Farm Animal Services announced that Vale Wood Farms, Loretto, Pa., is the second dairy in the nation, and the fifth supplier overall, to qualify for the Free Farmed label. The program is designed to certify that farm animals are raised in a humane manner. FAS -- a nonprofit arm of AHA -- administers and monitors the Free Farmed program, which was created by AHA in September 2000. In turn, the U.S. Department of Agriculture verifies FAS's inspection process. Other approved vendors to date are: dairy farm Clover-Stornetta Farms; Egg Innovations; pork processor Du Breton; and beef processor Meyer Natural Angus.
