ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- An in-store tear pad featuring a photo of Al Roker is serving as the cornerstone of Snacking Across America -- a major promotion sponsored by the Snack Food Association here and the National Potato Promotion Board.

The contest organizers are looking for patriotic or regional recipes that are made with salty snacks, including potato chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, popcorn, snack nuts, meat snacks, extruded snacks (cheese curls), corn chips, pork rinds or snack mixes.

Regional winners will be chosen from each of five areas of the country, and one grand prize winner will receive a July 4th backyard barbecue for 25 hosted by Roker, the ample, affable weatherman on The Today Show.

The contest runs through April 30. Winners will be chosen May 10. Roker will serve as one of the judges at the finals in New York.

Officials from SFA, the Denver-based National Potato Promotion Board, and local New York-based chefs and food writers are also expected to serve as judges.
