CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Crime is significantly affecting the way American consumers shop for groceries, according to a national survey.

"Even if a consumer says he or she is shopping 5% or 6% less, that small dropoff can wipe out the profit margin for many retailers," said Britt Beemer, cha
