SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Penny Curtiss Baking Co. has informed its employees that it will phase out the contract baking business it does for retailer Aldi next month. Penny Curtiss is owned by retailer Penn Traffic, based here. "We are obviously disappointed that Aldi has decided to pursue other fresh bakery production options. However, we feel fortunate to have had them as a valued customer for several years,” Penn Traffic said in a statement provided to SN. “Even though this announcement has the potential to impact our Penny Curtiss Baking employees, we continue daily to pursue new business opportunities and we are hopeful that one or more of these will come to fruition prior to feeling the financial impact of the Aldi loss." Aldi, with U.S. offices in Batavia, Ill., is taking its business to another baker in Pennsylvania, according to a Web posting by Robert Judd, business representative of Local 116 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union, which represents workers at Penny Curtiss plant.
