Retailers with strong cookie sales entice customers with inventive flavors, package size options and creative display placements

Consumers can’t get enough of cookies.

“I mean the whole bakery overall really had a strong year in 2013 compared to ’12 but cookies were one of the standouts,” said Jonna Parker, in-store bakery specialist, Nielsen Perishables Group.

Cookie dollar sales climbed 6.3% — the largest increase of any dessert category — and volume sales rose 5.3% in the 52 weeks ending Dec. 28, 2013, according to Nielsen.
