Ray's Launches Craft Beer in Growlers

BROOKINGS, Ore. — Ray's Food Place is featuring 15 varieties of draft craft beer at a store in Bend, Ore., which customers can purchase in growlers-to-go.

Growlers are 64-ounce bottles that are sealed with a screw cap, priced at $14.99 new with a free fill and $9.99 for refills. The store also offers 32-ounce "growlettes."

Ray's introduced the program last month at the single store, located in the high desert of central Oregon. If it is successful, the company said it plans to expand the program to other Ray's stores.

"Ideally, we will have a mix of beer you can buy in the bottle from our shelves and specialty craft beer you can't buy off the shelf," Greg Sandeno, president and chief executive officer of the 64-store C&K Market chain, said.

The beer at the Bend store is available inside "The High Desert Growler Room," located behind the wine department in an area that used to house a state liquor store. Selections include local craft beers and regional favorites, with new offerings rotated on a seasonal basis.
