Cake Decorating Challenge: Day Three

Cake Decorating Challenge: Day Three

img_1230.JPGAnd the winner is…Kim Oburne of Publix Super Market in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. IDDBA President, Ray Burke (president, in-store bakery and foodservice divisions, Rich Products Corp.) presented the trophy. Anne Freeman, Hy-Vee, Ames, Iowa, came in second and Charra Jarosz, Quality Food Centers, Seattle, placed third. Judges for the competition were Luke Bender, Maplehurst Bakeries Inc. and Jim Caliendo, Rich Products Corp.

Day Three of the competition required the three contestants to decorate three cakes of their choosing, one from each category: special occasion, theme/event and decorator’s choice. This day gives the decorators the most creative free rein, and while I enjoy all the cakes, I especially like seeing what it is decorators choose to create when they can do anything they want. Winner Kim chose to decorate a dolphin wedding, a picnic with a hero sandwich, hunk of cheese and a ham, all elements of the Dairy-Deli-Bakery show; and a sculpted surfboard with an airbrushed sunset.

This concluded the Cake Decorating Challenge Watch for 2009. Congrats to all three contestants, and we'll be back for Dairy-Deli-Bake 2010 June 6-8 in Houston.
