About a third of the respondents to a poll on SN’s website last week said they thought Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, would be the top-performing food retail stock again in 2013, after leading the sector in percentage gains for the last four years in a row. In 2012, Whole Foods saw its share price rise by nearly 35%, to end the year at just over $91. It was trading last week at more than $96 a share. Another third of poll respondents said a different nontraditional operator might emerge as the best performer in 2013, and the remaining third said the best gains would be seen from a traditional supermarket operator.
