OMAHA, Neb. -- ConAgra has extended the recall of all Peter Pan peanut butter, and all Great Value peanut butter beginning with the product code “2111,” including peanut butter toppings, back to October 2004. The original recall reached back to products purchased since May 2006. The Food and Drug Administration is continuing to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and with state and local officials to identify how the contamination occurred in order to prevent similar foodborne illness outbreaks. “This update reflects our ongoing work with the FDA,” said ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs. “We‘re going back to our product lists that include both past and present [retailer and food-service] customers to make sure all of the at-risk products are out of the marketplace. Given the long shelf life of peanut butter, we wanted to make sure we reach far enough back to touch all our bases.” -- Julie Gallagher
