SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion here is encouraging shoppers to buy pre-filled boxes containing a variety of Center Store staples that will be given to local families in need. Each box sells for $4.99 and contains 10 items. The majority of products are Food Lion-brand packaged goods, including macaroni and cheese, chunk light tuna, fruit salad and brown gravy. Several national-brand manufacturers also donated products, including ConAgra’s Chef Boyardee mini-bites and Uncle Ben’s enriched long-grain rice. The six-week “Shopping for Second Harvest” campaign, which ends Dec. 22, is being conducted in all Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid’s stores. All donations will be given to a local food bank affiliated with the America’s Second Harvest Network. “Food Lion believes that assisting the hungry should be a priority for food retailers and, as a grocer, Food Lion is well positioned to help,” Mark Messier, Food Lion’s vice president of retail services, said in a statement. “In supporting America’s Second Harvest food banks, we help build a spirit of partnership and strengthen our communities. It’s also a good way to remember our neighbors in need during the holidays.” This is Food Lion fifth-annual Shopping for Second Harvest campaign. Through the first four years of the campaign, Food Lion donated more than 369,634 bags or boxes of food worth more than $2 million.
