WASHINGTON — Meijer has donated 1,000 backpacks and the food to fill them to provide weekend nourishment to students on the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program.
The backpacks will be packed this Thursday as part of a hunger awareness event hosted here by the U.S. Department of Education. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and other members of Congress will help pack the bags that will be distributed by the nonprofit Blessings in a Backpack.
Blessings in a Backpack works with volunteers across the country to collect and package backpacks full of food for students to take home on the weekends. Backpacks are distributed Fridays to children who qualify. The organization currently feeds more than 60,000 children across 43 states in over 500 schools.
