New Product Trends: Meet the plants

Consumers seek out plant-based meats for nutrition, health and ethical reasons

Meat-free meals aren’t just for vegetarians anymore. While only 6% of North American consumers are vegetarian, 39% are actively trying to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diets, according to a recent Nielsen survey. And 23% of consumers want to see more plant-based proteins on the shelves. When these consumers find products they like, they’re spending. Dollar sales of plant-based food and beverages increased over 14% in the year ended July 8, 2017, according to Nielsen. While tofu is still popular, other plants and veggies are getting into the meat impersonation game lately. Consumers have plenty of options whether they’re swearing off meat, or giving Meatless Monday a try.
