Mark McGowan, EVP of merchandising for Ahold USA, will assume dual duties as president of the retailer’s Stop & Shop New England division and its EVP of operations following Ahold’s appointment of chief merchant to succeed him, according to an internal company memo.

McGowan had served as president of Stop & Shop New England from 2009 to 2012, when Joe Kelley took over.

Kelley left the company last month. His role is being filled on an interim basis by Don Sussman, president of the retailer’s Stop & Shop New York Metro division. McGowan is a 24-year veteran of Ahold. He was named EVP of merchandising in January of 2013 and previously served as EVP, supply chain. Ahold is in search of a new merchandising EVP but it was not immediately clear when the company would make a hire.

In a separate announcement Thursday, Netherlands-based parent company Ahold said that Jan Hommen would resume his role as chairman of the supervisory board effective immediately. Hommen had been on temporary leave since June. Rob van den Bergh, who replaced Hommen on an interim basis, will remain on the board.

Hommen is expected to chair the retailer’s annual meeting April 15.
