Supermarket Spending Jumps in June

ATLANTA — Same-store consumer spending in June via credit, signature debit, PIN debit, EBT, closed-loop prepaid cards and checks at U.S. supermarkets outperformed spending at all merchant locations, and represented an improvement from supermarket spending growth in May, according to “SpendTrend” data compiled by First Data Corp.

Spending in supermarkets, the report said, grew by 6.8% compared to June 2011, while spending at all merchant locations grew by 6.4%. The June supermarket spending numbers improved from a 4.2% increase in May, while the overall June spending numbers declined from a 7.0% increase in May. In the first quarter of 2012, spending at supermarkets grew by 6.3%.

In addition, same-store transactions in supermarkets grew by 5.4% in June over the previous year, compared to a 4.3% growth in May. Average ticket size at supermarkets grew 1.4% in June over the prior year, compared to a drop of 0.1% in May.

Broken down by tender type for overall spending at all merchant locations in June, increases were seen for credit-card spending (4.8%), signature debit (6.5%) and PIN debit (9.5%) while decreases were observed for check expenditures (7.5%) and closed-loop prepaid spending (4.3%).
