Wegmans Helps Spread Celiac Awareness

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans here is offering special samples of gluten-free products and distributing brochures from the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness in its Nature’s Marketplace section this week. The brochures, which can also be found in its pharmacy sections, contain information to help people determine if they might be celiac. The pamphlets also include a symptoms checklist and advice for talking to a doctor about a blood test. Wegmans’ Nature’s Marketplace departments offer between 150 and 250 shelf-stable and frozen gluten-free products, depending on store size. “In a typical year, the Consumer Affairs staff fields almost 1,000 inquiries regarding gluten status of different foods,” wrote Mary Ellen Burris, senior vice president of consumer affairs for Wegmans, in her latest column. “Many Wegmans brand products are labeled with a G for gluten-free — this wellness key helps shoppers who otherwise could spend hours reading package labels.” A list of 1,100 gluten-free Wegmans store-brand products is featured on the company’s website, and its weekly Fresh News email provides a gluten-free version of the featured meal-of-the-week recipe.
