By 2050, as many as one in three American consumers could have diabetes. The warning was sounded in a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which notes that the estimate is larger than previous predictions issued as recently as a year ago. Supermarket pharmacies, dietitians and some food and beverage products allow the current generation of 24 million diabetics to shop in conventional stores, but much stronger interventions — from all stakeholders — will be required to turn back the pending tide. The CDC warns that not doing enough now will have far-reaching implications down the road, meaning supermarkets will certainly face a much larger class of special-needs consumers.
