Acme Workers to Vote on Contract

Unionized workers for Acme Markets in southeastern Pennsylvania are scheduled to vote tonight on a contract offer from the Supervalu-owned chain.

PHILADELPHIA — Unionized workers for Acme Markets in southeastern Pennsylvania are scheduled to vote tonight on a contract offer from the Supervalu-owned chain.

Leaders of Local 1776 of the United Food and Commercial Workers here have condemned the contract for eliminating Sunday pay, decreasing company pension and insurance contributions and allowing for certain jobs to replaced with non-union labor. It accused the chain of “refusing to bargain” despite 18 months of negotiations.

Acme reportedly will impose the new deal on workers July 10 with or without the union’s proposal. The contract would affect workers at 41 stores in the Philadelphia area.
