Bashas Gets Involved at Borders

Bashas’ registered dietitian Barbara Ruhs handed out free “goodie bags” containing healthful items from Bashas at a recent cookbook-signing event here at a Borders Bookstore.

PHOENIXBashas’ registered dietitian Barbara Ruhs handed out free “goodie bags” containing healthful items from Bashas at a recent cookbook-signing event here at a Borders Bookstore.

The star of the event was Hungry Girl aka Lisa Lillien, who was signing her latest book, “Hungry-Girl 1-2-3 – The Easiest, Most Delicious, Guilt-Free Recipes on the Planet.”

Ruhs told SN this week she became aware of Hungry Girl and her books recently, and then checked her out on the Internet, and also her books.

Lillien is not a dietitian nor a nutritionist, just a self-described hungry girl who wants to eat right and help others do that, too.

“I signed up for her emails and have been following her on twitter,” said Ruhs, who is a big believer in the value of using social media to spread the healthy-eating message. “When I heard she was coming to Phoenix, I inquired about how Bashas could be represented at the signing. I was invited to hand out goodie bags.”

Among other items included from Bashas’ were Mountain High Yogurt and Eighth Continent soy milk.

Ruhs also took the opportunity to gather some info about the attendees at the book-signing last weekend with the idea of inviting them to a later event at Bashas.

“I wanted to learn more about the people who were at the event, so I quickly had my marketing team design an ‘entry form’ to collect key demographic and contact information so we can plan such an event at one of our stores," Ruhs said, adding that she hopes a similar event could be held at Bashas sometime in the summer.
