GREENVILLE, S.C. — Bi-Lo has begun using Google’s Business Apps service, a Web-based communications platform that includes email, word processing, scheduling and document sharing capabilities.

The chain, with more than 207 locations in four states, expects the service to produce hundreds of thousands in annual savings by improving business efficiency through enhanced communication and collaboration.

For example, the switch to Google Business Apps from Lotus Notes will result in 60% email cost reduction, eliminating hundreds of analog tapes used for email backup and reducing storage and power costs by 10%, said Bi-Lo. Google’s service also allows the chain’s employees to collaborate on projects electronically, eliminating the need to print multiple copies of a single document and greatly reducing paper waste.

In addition, the security of customer loyalty card and credit card information will be improved via Google’s service, which reduces the risk of data loss through spam and spyware and eliminates data on employees’ workstations, said Bi-Lo.
