SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods here will install Blockbuster Express DVD-rental kiosks in all 57 stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut by Sept. 3, the retailer announced yesterday.
The kiosks are supplied by Duluth, Ga.-based NCR Corp., which entered into an agreement with Blockbuster last year to begin testing the kiosks.
NCR said it expects to invest as much as $60 million in 2009 to build out its DVD-rental kiosk operations. The company expects to deploy more than 2,500 kiosks in 2009 for a total of 10,000 kiosks by mid-year 2010.
Big Y will share in the revenues of the $1 per night DVD rentals. The kiosks offer shoppers a wide selection of over 800 new release and classic DVDs.
No membership is required to rent a DVD from Blockbuster Express – customers use their credit card and are charged $1 per night until they return the DVD. DVDs can be returned at any Blockbuster Express kiosk – not just the kiosk where they normally rent.
“We looked at a number of different options of DVD-rental kiosk companies, and we were convinced that NCR delivered the best experience, the best choice, and the best brand,” said Phil Schneider, Big Y vice president of sales, in a press statement.
