Big Y Trims Staff: Reports

A new store-operating model that allows Big Y to run its supermarkets with fewer employees has resulted in a staff reduction at the privately owned chain, according to reports.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A new store-operating model that allows Big Y to run its supermarkets with fewer employees has resulted in a staff reduction at the privately owned chain, according to reports.

Local newspapers said the company issued a statement to employees last week explaining that it had been testing the new store-operating model for a year. The statement did not specify the number of layoffs, although one source put the number at 300, apparently including one store that was closed.

The chain, which operates 58 locations in New England, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
