JACKSON, Miss. — Brookshire Grocery Co. plans to exit this market through the sale of two of its stores here and the closure of two others, the company confirmed Thursday.

A spokesman for Brookshire told SN that two locations in the city of Jackson would close in the middle of next month and that the company has a contract to sell two stores in Flowood and Ridgeland, Miss.

Local reports said Kroger Co., Cincinnati, has agreed to buy the latter two stores. Kroger could not be reached for comment Thursday. Kroger operates 12 stores in the market and has a 30.4% share, according to a 2009 report by Metro Market Studies, Tucson, Ariz. Brookshire was the No. 3 operator in the market behind Wal-Mart Stores (No. 1) and Kroger.
