Bruno’s Union to Meet With Suitors

The labor union representing employees at Bruno’s Supermarkets is preparing to meet next week with prospective buyers for the stores, which are operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The labor union representing employees at Bruno’s Supermarkets here is preparing to meet next week with prospective buyers for the stores, which are operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Bruno’s and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1657 this week agreed to postpone a hearing on the retailer’s motion to decertify the union, rescheduling it for April 2. Bruno’s said that successor language in its contract was curtailing interest from potential buyers.

“This is an important first step toward keeping good jobs in Alabama and Florida, and we are eager to meet with representatives of Bruno’s and purchaser representatives to discuss how the union can forge a constructive partnership with any prospective buyer,” Elaise Fox, president of Local 1657, said in a statement.
