SAN DIEGO — Bumble Bee Foods will begin distributing reduced sodium albacore and light meat tuna to supermarkets next month.

Bumble Bee albacore contains 140 milligrams or less of sodium per serving — a 44% reduction from average sodium levels in 2008, while light meat tuna has been reduced to 180 milligrams per serving.

“We started this initiative almost two years ago, conducting extensive research and development, and are pleased to begin shipping significantly reduced sodium levels in all albacore — our core product line — and light meat tuna to supermarkets nationwide starting May 1,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Lischewski in a statement.
