CVS Adds Discount Generic Program

One of the last major holdouts in the pharmacy business has added a discount generics program.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — One of the last major holdouts in the pharmacy business has added a discount generics program. Late last week, CVS/pharmacy here introduced a new pharmacy health care savings program aimed primarily at the uninsured, the company said. Starting Nov. 9, consumers who obtain a CVS/pharmacy Health Savings Pass for a $10 annual enrollment fee can fill a 90-day prescription for one of more than 400 common generic maintenance medications for $9.99 at CVS. In addition, the Health Savings Pass will provide access to services and screenings at CVS’ MinuteClinic at a 10% discount for cash-paying patients. “As the largest provider of pharmacy health care in the nation, we felt it was the right time to offer consumers another way to make their health care more affordable,” said Tom Ryan, CVS Caremark’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. Walgreens, Deerfield, Ill., has a similar program. Other retailers, including supermarkets and mass merchants, do not require a membership fee for their generics programs.
