Dow Fluid Sales Indicates Growth of Secondary Loop Refrigeration

Dow Chemical is reporting that demand for its secondary loop refrigeration fluid grew by about 120% last year, reflecting a surge of interest from food retailers in that type of refrigeration system.

MIDLAND, Mich. — Dow Chemical here is reporting that demand for its secondary loop refrigeration fluid grew by about 120% last year, reflecting a surge of interest from food retailers in that type of refrigeration system.

Demand for 2009 “promises to be equally brisk,” the company said in a statement.

Dow’s Dowfrost Inhibited Proplylene Glycol-based Heat Transfer Fluids are used in medium-temperature secondary loop refrigeration systems to cool meat, dairy, produce and other products in a supermarket in place of traditional refrigerants, which are limited to the compressor room.

As a result, the volume of primary refrigerant is reduced by 65% to 85% compared to a standard refrigeration system, cutting the amount of refrigerant that can leak into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
