Explosion Prompts Safeway Donation

Safeway here said Friday that its philanthropic arm, The Safeway Foundation, will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help people affected by the natural gas explosion and fire in nearby San Bruno, Calif. The company also said it will give grocery gift cards to families impacted by the fire.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said Friday that its philanthropic arm, The Safeway Foundation, will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help people affected by the natural gas explosion and fire in nearby San Bruno, Calif.

The company also said it will give grocery gift cards to families impacted by the fire.

Within hours of the explosion, Safeway said its stores provided pallets of water, 200 pounds of ice and more than 250 bagged lunches to first responders on the front lines, workers at an emergency operation center and displaced residents at a temporary shelter.

The company said it has also designated approximately 80 stores in the surrounding counties as sites for the public to make donations for the relief effort by the American Red Cross.
