TOKYO — FamilyMart Co. here said it plans to maintain Famima, its U.S. operation, at 10 stores while it assesses its expansion strategy.

The convenience store chain is weighing several options, including expanding further or pulling out of the U.S. altogether, Junji Ueda, president, told Reuters in an interview.

FamilyMart had 12 stores in the U.S. two years ago but has since closed two, and the 10 that remain — all in the Southern California area — are losing money, Ueda told the news service.

The company, which franchises nearly 17,000 stores in Japan and other countries, said it hopes to open 4,500 additional stores in China over the next five years.
