Food Lion Adds New Internet Game

Food Lion has created an online Thanksgiving game to encourage interaction with its private-label products.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has created an online Thanksgiving game to encourage interaction with its private-label products. Accessed at foodlion.com, the “Cranberry Cannon Game” involves shooting Food Lion-brand cranberry sauce at flying turkeys. Players collect points based on the number of turkeys they hit. Once they complete the game, players are offered coupons for $1 off Food Lion frozen vegetables, $1 off a 12-pack of Canada Dry or 7-Up soft drinks; and $1 off on Mr. and Mrs. T’s Bloody Mary Mix.

The cannon game comes a month after Food Lion launched the “Matching Game” to encourage shoppers to learn the names of Food Lion’s brands. The game operated in a fashion similar to traditional memory card games. It includes 12 “cards” that players can click to reveal a Food Lion brand. They then must click on another card to see if it reveals a match. Once all matches were found, a $1 print-at-home coupon for a private label product was offered. The game was initially used as a training program to familiarize employees with Food Lion store brands. Food Lion decided to use it on the consumer side to help promote its seven private labels — Food Lion, Healthy Accents, Home 360, Smart Option, On the Go Bistro, Nature’s Place and Taste of Inspirations — several of which were introduced last year.
