EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here said Tuesday it helped 967 schools in California, Nevada and Arizona raise more than $670,000 through its "Shop for Schools" program.

Public and private schools with kindergarten through eighth grades and located within a three-mile radius of a Fresh & Easy store were eligible to participate. Schools that registered accumulated receipts and received a $1 cash donation for every $20 spent at a Fresh & Easy store between Sept. 15 and Dec. 31.

Fresh & Easy said it ran its first Shop for School program in February 2009 in response to the schools' need for additioning funding — an effort that raised more than $130,000 over two months. Fresh & Easy increased the length of the promotion this time, and it also added "Shopping Nights for Schools," which ran from 4 to 8 p.m. — one night for each participating school — during which 5% of a store's sales were donated to that school.

"Schools continue to struggle for funding right now, and we are proud we can be part of the solution and give back to our neighbors," said Roberto Munoz, direct of neighborhood affairs for Fresh & Easy.
