Giant Closes on Genuardi’s Buy

CARLISLE, Pa. — The Giant-Carlisle division of Ahold USA said Friday it has successfully completed its acquisition of 15 stores in the Philadelphia area from Genuardi's Family Markets, a subsidiary of Safeway.

As previously reported, the chain received approval on June 15 from the Federal Trade Commission to buy the stores, and was scheduled to begin converting them to the Giant banner this month. Giant originally unveiled its agreement to acquire the stores on Jan. 5. One of the 16 stores in that original agreement, a Genuardi’s in Newtown, Pa., was transferred to McCaffrey’s supermarkets to satisfy FTC antitrust concerns.

Weis Markets, Sunbury, Pa., last month completed its acquistion of three other Pennsylvania Genuardi’s stores in Conshohocken, Doylestown and East Norristown.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway previously said it would seek buyers for the remaining Genuardi’s in the market.
