PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle here has joined the Association of Retail Technology Standards (ARTS), a division of the National Retail Federation, Washington. ARTS is a retailer-driven group dedicated to helping retailers and technology vendors create global standards for retail technology, particularly in-store systems.

Last year, ARTS launched its Fresh Initiative aimed at developing new data communications standards to support the integrity of traceability and country-of-origin-labeling (COOL) information for fresh products. ARTS has previously developed a retail data model, a Unified POS standard for POS peripherals, XML schemas to integrate retail applications, and standard request-for-proposal documents. It has also issued white papers on cloud computing and service-oriented architecture and plans to release a blueprint for mobile marketing in July.

Other food retailers that have joined ARTS include Ahold USA, BJ's Wholesale Club, A&P, Kroger, Raley’s and Safeway; Ahold USA, Kroger and Safeway are also members of NRF. Giant Eagle declined to comment further on its ARTS membership.
