Global Market Development Center (GMDC) said that its 41st annual General Merchandise Marketing Conference drew more than 850 retail, wholesale and supplier member attendees.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Global Market Development Center (GMDC) said Wednesday that its 41st annual General Merchandise Marketing Conference held June 3-7 in Orlando, Fla., drew more than 850 retail, wholesale and supplier member attendees.

Almost 11,000 Controlled Casual Conference appointments took place, in addition to 169 Senior Executive Conferences (SECs) that were piloted at the GM event.

During the conference, GMDC launched a preview of the new GM study that they have undertaken with the consulting group Radian. The initial analysis and insights of the study, Winning in GM: Trends, Insights & Strategies, is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2011 and will include information that will establish performance benchmarks, as well a "blue prints" for implementation.

Dave McConnell, president and chief executive officer of GMDC, pointed out that GM categories are an important part of the discussion around the revitalization of Center Store, and it is necessary to rethink traditional GM categories and identify successful growth opportunities.

"This study will quantify the value of GM and provide insights, strategies and solutions to grow business and maintain customer loyalty," he said.
