Grab Opportunities for Advancement: NEW Panel

Women whose goals include career advancement must be willing to take advantage of opportunities as they come, panelists said Wednesday during a discussion sponsored by the Network of Executive Women.

YORBA LINDA, Calif. — Women whose goals include career advancement must be willing to take advantage of opportunities as they come, panelists said here Wednesday during a discussion sponsored by the Network of Executive Women.

Sue Klug, president of the Southern California division of Albertsons, a division of Supervalu, Minneapolis, said women need to set career goals for themselves, “though your career path will rarely go as you planned it, so be willing to take risks and stay open to opportunities that make sense in achieving your goal.”

Rojon Hasker, president of lifestyle and new concepts for Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., said relocations can be difficult, “but if you let an opportunity pass, you may not get that chance again.”

According to Kim Nelson, president of the snack division of General Mills, Minneapolis, “You must own your career by deciding what you want and how hard you are willing to work to achieve it.”

Joan Chow, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for ConAgra Foods, Omaha, Neb., urged women to make their goals clear to their managers. “People can’t read your mind, and you can’t expect others to help you steer your career without knowing what you want,” she said.

The conference was held at the Richard M. Nixon Library here.
