Hannaford Announces Lower Holiday Prices

Hannaford Supermarkets announced that its prices on thousands of items are lower this holiday season, with some staples seeing double-digit declines from a year ago.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets yesterday announced that its prices on thousands of items are lower this holiday season, with some staples seeing double-digit declines from a year ago.

With the help of food inflation trends reversing this year compared with 2008, Hannaford has lowered regular prices on 10,000 items and offered more aggressive specials, such as free item offers tied with holiday giving, said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson, in a release.

Lower priced items include turkey at 40 cents a pound, a 10-year low, compared with 47 cents last year; produce prices down 6%, with tomatoes, peppers, grapes, melons and pears among the many items seeing double-digit declines; and holiday meal item prices down 15%.

In particular, shoppers are taking advantage of opportunities to buy private brand foods and products. The share of these lower-priced items in the baskets of Hannaford shoppers increased in 2009, the release said.
