Hotel Union Splits From UFCW Group

Unite Here, a union representing hotel workers and others, last week said it was leaving Change to Win, the union coalition that includes the United Food and Commercial Workers, to rejoin the AFL-CIO.

WASHINGTON — Unite Here, a union representing hotel workers and others, last week said it was leaving Change to Win, the union coalition that includes the United Food and Commercial Workers, to rejoin the AFL-CIO.

Both Unite Here and the UFCW had left the AFL-CIO in 2005, citing differences in their preferred use of resources and other issues.

"The UFCW respects the decision by Unite Here to return to the AFL-CIO," said Joe Hansen, president of the UFCW, who cited the difficulties of Unite Here's disputes with the Service Employees International Union.

Reports said Unite Here and SEIU had been competing with each other for members.
