K-VA-T's Thomas Named WGA Woman of the Year

LAS VEGAS — The Women Grocers of America said here Tuesday its 2012 Woman of the Year is Barbara Thomas, director of training at K-VA-T Food Stores, Arlington, Va.

The award recognizes an industry woman whose leadership has contributed to the success of her company. Thomas, who joined Food City as a part-time cashier in 1974, was personally selected in 1979 by Jack Smith, founder of the company, to oversee the chain's training program.

According to Peter Larkin, president and chief executive officer of NGA, "Barbara is first and foremost a mentor, not only for her company but also in the community where she lives and works. She is an innovator in advancing strong training programs to increase customer service and satisfaction."
