SEATTLE — PCC Natural Markets here has announced that Trudy Bialic, PCC’s director of consumer affairs, is a candidate for retailer representative on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Standards Board.
The board consists of four farmer/growers, two handler/processors, one scientist, three consumer/public interest advocates, three environmentalists, one retailer and one USDA-accredited certifying agent.
The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture appoints board members to five-year terms, during which they assist the secretary with matters related to the integrity and implementation of the National Organic Program, such as deciding standards for ingredients that can be used in USDA Certified Organic products.
PCC’s nutrition education manager, Goldie Caughlan, served on the NOSB as a consumer representative from 2001-2006. Bialic has nearly 20 years of organic retail experience, and has served as PCC’s director of public affairs since 2000.
The USDA staff will evaluate the NOSB candidates and announce appointees later this year.
