Publix Suspends Deliveries During Storm

LAKELAND, Fla. Publix Super Markets here suspended deliveries to its Atlanta Division stores as of Sunday and closed stores early on Monday because of the severe winter storm, but all stores had reopened on Tuesday.

"The trucks are loaded, we're just waiting for the word to get back on the roads," Maria Brous, a spokeswoman for Publix, told SN Tuesday afternoon. The storm created dangerously icy road conditions in the area, reports said.

The company decided to close most of its Atlanta Division stores — which include 179 locations in Georgia and 45 in Alabama — at 4 p.m. Monday to allow employees to drive home during daylight, Brous explained. Stores reopened Tuesday, although some have limited crews on hand, she said.

Brous said traffic was brisk in the stores before the storm hit, but stores were well-stocked for the rush.

Other retailers in the market also shuttered some stores temporarily, including Earth Fare and Kroger.

A spokeswoman for Kroger was quoted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as saying some trucks had been able to make deliveries, but most had not.
