CALGARY, Alberta — The Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors issued a $10,000 reward for information concerning recent product tampering in Canadian supermarkets, according to local reports.
This week Safeway became the latest victim in a series of tampering episodes in Western Canada, which had previously impacted Sobeys and local independents.
In some of the cases, bits of metal or pins were said to have been inserted in products. According to the Vancouver Sun, a woman was arrested in one tampering case, but the incidents have continued.
"It's our hope that this reward will lead to arrest and conviction," Allen Langdon, vice president at the CCGD, was quoted as saying.
Retailers have stepped up security in the wake of the incidents, the newspaper reported.
